Ek, Ah Can db) Ah Can Ek / Ho Chan Ek: he of the snake star / five snake star: a possible alternative name for Landa's Hozanek which is recorded as Ah Can Ek (lord of the snake star / lord of the four stars?) on line c263 and as Ix Ho Chan Ek (she of the five snake star) on line rb154.003. Landa's Hozanek is the name for the bacab of the west. Most probably however this name is either Ah Can Ek or Ho Chan Ek. See Ah Can Ek, Ah Ho Chan Ek. See also bacab. The bacabs are also related to the four days which begin the Mayan year, Kan, Muluc, Hiix, and Cauac, which in turn are related to the four world directions. The bacabs have various alternative names which are as follows: for the year Kan (to the east): Ah Can Tzic Nal, Chacal Bacab, Chac Pauahtun, Chac Xib Chac; for the year Muluc (to the north): Ah Zac Dziu, Zacal Bacab, Zac Pauahtun, Zac Xib Chac; for the year Hiix (to the west): Ah Can Ek, Ekel Bacab, Ek Pauahtun, Ek Xib Chac; for the year Cauac (to the south): Hobnil, Kan Bacab, Kan Pauahtun, Kan Xib Chac. However, in the Landa discussion below it will be noted that Kan is aligned with the south / yellow, Muluc is aligned with east / red, Hiix is aligned with the north / white, and Cauac is aligned with the west / black. This shift in alignment is probably due to the fact that Landa mistakenly placed the Kan (yellow) deities in the year Kan, and thus shifted all the year bearers clockwise one quadrant.

Ek Cocay Mut
Roys/Chu/153: Ek-Cocah-mut was its face to the rulers, to the wise men. Note: Literally, the Black Cocah-mut. Yax-Cocah-mut was one of the regents of the Muluc Years (Landa 1929, p. 28). The name is spelled Yax-Cocay-mut in the Tizimin MS. (p. 25) which might be translated as "the green fire-fly bird." Avendaño saw at Tayasal a mask set in a stone column which he identified as Ah-Cocah-mut. "I came to recognize it, since I had already read about it in their old papers and had seen it in their Anahtes, which they use, which are books of barks of trees, polished and covered with lime, in which by painted figures and characters, they have foretold their future events. By which means I knew that there was found in the said Peten Itzá the said idol of Yaxchecab, that of Cocahmut, that of Ytzimna (Itzamna) Kauil, which means "horse of the devil" (Bowditch, unpublished translation p. 67. Avendaño, original MS., f. 29r.). Yax-Cocah-mut is probably one of the names of Itzamna. None of the hieroglyphic prophecies has survived, but it is evident that the present series follows the original model.

Roys/Bac/131: Culix. The name of what is ritually called a "bird" in an incantation for snake-pulsation of the abdomen (MS p. 119). Sice we find it associated with the chac-ec-wasp, it may well be the name of an insect.
Roys/Bac/132: Chac-ec. Substituted for chac-ek ("great-star"), which is defined as "morning star" (Motul Dict.). The chac-ec is a stingless reddish wasp, which nests in trees and makes an edible comb (Pacheco Cruz, Diccionario de la fauna yucateca, 97). It is, however, "chac-ek" that is cited in an incantation for snake-pulsation of the abdomen (MS p. 119). The context calls for either a bird or an insect.
