Cabal Cħeen Mani db) To the South-southwest of the church of Mani about 300 meters away there is the main well of the town. It is evident from the well made stairway leading down to the water that this was once the major source, and perhaps the only source, of water for the town. There is a well at Uxmal which is called Cabal Cħeen Uxmal, so the name is not unique.
The opening of Cabal Cħeen is in a hollow or dip in the terrain. The land in the hollow around the opening to the well is about 20 meters below the level of the plaza on which the church sits. The opening to the well is about 5 meters in diameter and the shaft goes down to the water in a southeasterly direction at about 30 degrees. From the opening down to the water itself is about 20 meters. This is in contrast to other nearby towns where the well opening is at the same level as the town itself and thus it is about 40 or in some cases 50 meters down to the water. There is a very well made stairways which leads down to the water. The pool is neither very deep, about 1 meter, nor very big, about 2 meters by 3 meters. At one end of the pool there appears to be an opening which connects the pool with a larger water system, and this must be so because there are fishes to be found in the pool, something which does not happen if the pool had no connection. Directly above the pool there is a hole which has been cut through the rock so that people can haul up water by the use of ropes. People always say that these holes, which are to be found in most wells of this type, were made by the Spanish. It seems strange that the Maya, who were busily cutting stone to make their stela and pyramids, could not also have cut these holes, but that is another matter.
There are four mysterious or miraculous features of this well. The first is that at the opening in the middle of the stairways about 10 steps down from the entrance there is a little box-like construction. Sticking horizontally out of this is a piece of rope. The people say that when you cut this rope it bleeds. There is supposed to be a ceremony at a certain annual fiesta in which someone actually does cut the rope to make it bleed. The second feature is that there are caves going off in all direction from the level of the box. One of these leads to a walled up section. Behind this wall lives Xib Babaal, described as a dragon. People say that once Gringos came and tried to take down this wall. But every evening the wall would be rebuilt and the Gringos never did get to see Xib Babaal. The third is that just above the water level there are more, smaller caves leading off in all directions, but the most important one is the one which goes all the way to Ho (Merida). These can be used by Uay Mizoob (were cats), Uay Pekoob (were dogs), and other Uayoob for quick passage to the city.
The fourth item is that this well is the home of X-Nuc Mani (the old woman of Mani). She owns the well, and when the end of the world comes the well at Mani will be the only well which has water. People will be so desperate for water that they will pay her whatever she asks for water, and what she will ask is that for every cocoyol sized cup of water you have to give her one of your children.

Cabal Ix Bach Can db) presumed to be an alternative name for Kichil Coba, since the occurance of this name is in connection with the seating of 13 Ahau Katun, and in most cases this seating occures at Kinchil Coba. Cabal = low, ix = female, bach = chachalaca, can = snake. However, since the word for "sky/heaven" is spelled both can and caan in the colonial texts, an alternative meaning might involve the word "heaven" rather than "snake". Yet another alternative is that ix bach can is an yet unidentified plant name, this because the word can is also a common term meaning "shoot", and is to be found in various plant names. The use of cabal as given in this name is consistent with Mayan plant nomenclature. It is interesting to note that both from the Motul I entry given above and the Chilam Balam entry it appears that Coba and the bird bach are interconnected. See the entry Coba below.
