Summary: Notes for a dictionary of the Maya language, consisting of Maya words in alphabetical order with Spanish equivalents and notes. The alphabetical sequence repeats four times, presumably representing information from different, unidentified sources. The last sequence is on a larger paper size without pagination. Front matter includes a signed preface by Juan Pió Pérez and an annotated offprint of C. Hermann Berendt's 1871 essay Los trabajos lingüísticos de Don Juan Pio Perez. The first gathering containing this material is detached. Two loose leaves of additional notes by Perez have been removed, unfolded, and shelved with the manuscript.

Summary: Published copy of the second edition of Beltrán's Maya grammar (Merida de Yucatan: J. D. Espinosa, 1859), with annotations and corrections by C. Hermann Berendt. A note in Berendt's hand on the page before the printed title page explains the system of annotations in black (corrections made in copies of the first edition by Beltrán de Santa Rosa), blue (reproduction of the first edition in cases of printing errors in the second edition), and red (Berendt's own additions and corrections). A page following the printed text is the beginning (A-B) of a manuscript index titled Indice comparativo in which Berendt traces references for the index entries in the two editions of Beltrán's grammar as well as the earlier Maya grammar by Gabriel de San Buenaventura.

Summary: Published copy of the second edition of Beltrán's Maya grammar (Merida de Yucatan: J. D. Espinosa, 1859), with annotations and corrections by C. Hermann Berendt in red ink and pencil, perhaps a rough draft of those found in Copy 1 of this item. The printed text is followed by a manuscript index (pp. [243-250]) to the printed text, in which most of the entries are Maya words or syllables. This copy has been trimmed more than Copy 1, leaving it with relatively narrow margins.

Summary: Collection of works on the Maya language, including works on grammar and lexicography, by Juan Pío Pérez and C. Hermann Berendt. Berendt copied a work by Pérez on Maya grammar; created an index to that work; added his own essay on Pérez's linguistic work; copied extracts from Pérez's introduction to the Diccionario de Tícul; and began an essay on the history of lexicography in the Maya language. A table of contents in Berendt's hand is on the front flyleaf.

Summary: A manuscript copy of a Maya grammar written by Joaquin Ruz, translated into English by Baptist missionary John Kingdon, and printed at the Baptist Mission Press in Belize in 1847. A prefatory note by C. Hermann Berendt states that Ruz tried unsuccessfully to force Maya to follow the rules of Spanish grammar and refers to numerous errors in Maya and Spanish by Kingdon. One such error is that the grammar is not Yucatan, but Yucatecan. Berendt also claims that Ruz's work is a Maya translation of an earlier Spanish grammar textbook.

Summary: A 19th-century copy of Beltrán de Santa Rosa's 1740 book of prayers in Maya and a dialogue or catechism in Maya with a facing translation in Spanish, with extensive front matter in Spanish; followed by a copy of the Maya texts from the second edition of Beltrán de Santa Rosa's Declaracion de la doctrina christiana en el idioma yucateco (1757), including the Lord's prayer, Ave Maria, Apostle's Creed, commandments, sacraments, articles of faith, and dialogues or catechisms in Maya. Berendt indicates in a note (p. [86]) that he has omitted the Spanish discussion at the beginning of the Declaracion (pp. 2-22 in the printed text).

Summary: C. Hermann Berendt's copy of Juan Pío Pérez's study of the medical contents of the Books of Chilam Balam, with additional extracts and notes by Berendt. The first two sections of the manuscript are alphabetical lists of plants (p. 1-28) and ailments (p. 29-40), with references to burns, childbirth complications, colic, depression, gangrene, snake bites, stomach-aches, and worms. The later pages of the manuscript (after p. 51) are in much rougher form, with notes pasted in.

Summary: A 19th-century copy of Torresano's 1754 grammar for the Cakchiquel language based on Flores' Arte de la lengua metropolitana del reyno cakchiquel of 1753 (note on p. 2). It includes a section on counting in Cakchiquel (pp. 109-126); "Parallelo de las lenguas Kiche, Cakchiquel y [Tz]utuhil," a comparison of some of the grammar points of the three languages and a vocabulary list in four columns comparing common words in the three languages with translations in Spanish (pp. 127-148); "Ortographia para la buena pronunciacion de estas tres languas," a discussion of the letters which these languages have in common with Spanish and those letters omitted, as well as the Parra letters used to represent the six sounds unique to these three languages (pp. 149-155); and a number of petitions and prayers in Spanish alongside Cakchiquel translations (p. 159-179).

Summary: A 19th-century copy of a 17th-century manuscript about the calendar of the Cakchikel Indians, with an introduction about the original manuscript by C. Hermann Berendt, who made the copy. Berendt also compares the Mayan and Aztec calendars and lists the names of the months and days for each. The manuscript text contains the names of each month in the Cakchikel calendar along with their meanings and gives a list of the days with their corresponding dates in the Julian calendar.

Summary: Manuscript copy by C. Hermann Berendt of the second edition of Levanto's Cathecismo, printed in 1776, including facsimile title page in pencil, Levanto's note to the reader, the Cathecismo, Explicacion, and Mysterios del Santísimo Rosario, but lacking some of the printed edition's front matter. Where Levanto's Explicacion de la doctrina christiana is printed in double columns for Spanish and Zapotec, Berendt places the translations on facing pages, Spanish on the left and Zapotec on the right. Berendt's attribution of the Mysterios del Santisimo Rosario to Fr. Jacinto Vilches is not in the printed edition. The penultimate leaf includes a colophon-like inscription, with initials standing for words, that suggests a date of 22 May 1794.

Summary: 19th-century copy of a description of the Guatemalan province of Verapaz written by three Dominican friars, Francisco, prior of Viana; Lucas Gallego; and Guillem Cadena. Includes information on topography, climate, flora, fauna, settlements, churches, and population, as well as the work of the Dominicans in the province between 1554 and 1574. To his copy, C. Hermann Berendt added excerpts from Juan Gavarrette Escobar's Apuntes para los Anales del antiquo reino de Guatemala (f. 5v-6r) and a map of the region around Lago de Izabal, here under the name Golfo Dolce, copied in 1878 from a 1680 manuscript of Fuentes y Guzman's Recordacion Florida at the Biblioteca de la Universidad, Guatemala (f. 7v). There are also corrections and annotations in the main text in red ink. 16 loose notes, presumably made in the preparation of the manuscript and previously stored in an envelope mounted on f. 6r, are now in mylar and filed with the manuscript.
